Goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez, Nemanja Vidic and two from Cristiano Ronaldo saw United romp to victory at The Hawthorns and increase the pressure on Liverpool, who play on Wednesday.

However, the home side were left aggrieved by the controversial red card shown to their captain Paul Robinson by referee Rob Styles when the score was just 1-0.

The match brought further cheer for United fans as it marked the return from injury of centre-back Rio Ferdinand after several weeks out with a back complaint.

In one sense, United have not missed Ferdinand, increasing their run of consecutive Premier League clean sheets to 10 in his absence. This win made it a record-breaking 11 - they have not conceded in the league since November 8.

However, with Jonny Evans injured along with first-choice left-back Patrice Evra and twins Rafael and Fabio da Silva, Ferdinand’s return saved Sir Alex Ferguson from having to play central midfielder Darren Fletcher at right-back and Gary Neville in the centre.

West Brom started positively - the consequence of a run that saw them threaten to climb out of the relegation zone.

Gianni Zuiverloon saw a goalbound shot stopped by Michael Carrick after he collected a weak Edwin van der Sar punch. Then Jay Simpson robbed Neville on the West Brom left and jinked inside, but his shot was deflected wide by Ferdinand.

Marc-Antoine Fortune proved a thorn in United’s side, but his finishing could not match his pace and he failed to convert any of his three half-chances. United gradually exerted greater control over the game, and made the telling breakthrough midway through the first half.

Neville threw in to Ryan Giggs, who in turn found Berbatov. The Bulgarian played a give-and-go to Michael Carrick, collected the return pass and slotted underneath Carson from an angle on the right side.

The Baggies continued to show signs of life, particularly through Fortune, but the five minutes leading up to half-time effectively extinguished their chances.

Robinson and Ji-Sung Park both attacked a loose ball and the West Brom defender slid in with such force that his momentum carried his trailing leg painfully into Park’s midriff.

It was a full-blooded, ungainly challenge perhaps deserving of a yellow card, but certainly not the red that Styles brandished.

Disbelief was etched on Robinson’s face, while the United players’ reaction suggested they also felt the defender had been treated harshly.

United rubbed salt copiously into the wound three minutes later when they won a free-kick by the right corner flag - another contentious decision that Robert Koren disputed vociferously enough to earn a booking.

Giggs crossed straight at Carson, who caught the ball but then fumbled it straight to the feet of Tevez. The Argentine snaffled his unexpected gift, smashing a left-foot shot into the net from no more than two yards.

It was a terrible error that effectively ended West Brom’s challenge and will surely see Carson slip even further down Fabio Capello’s pecking order of England goalkeepers.

Just before the hour mark Ryan Donk hit a post with a powerful drive that had Van der Sar beaten, but thereafter it was all United.

Vidic met a Giggs corner with too much power for Carson to keep out, and the Welsh veteran notched up a third assist with his clever lay-off to Ronaldo to make it four on 65 minutes.

United were in no mood to show mercy. On 73 minutes Tevez released Berbatov down the right, the Bulgarian dribbled infield and slipped a perfect through-ball to Ronaldo who finished low through the legs of Carson.

A less diplomatic manager than Tony Mowbray would have had harsh words for Styles, who brandished eight cards in a generally clean-fought game - six of them to West Brom players.
